Plot
After Puss in Boots defeats a giant monster, he is accidentally killed by a bell. Waking up, he discovers that he only has one life left after burning through his previous eight lives. Puss initially brushes it off, but when he loses a fight with a wolf he believes to be a bounty hunter, he decides to hang up his cape and become a cat for Mama Luna. Time passes, he soon meets a dog with no name, but their conversation is cut short when Goldilocks and The Three Bears Crime Family show up to find him. However, after they find his grave, they inadvertently reveal a Wishing Star to Puss, who decides to find it and get his lives back. The dog comes along too, who Puss decides to call "Perrito". He finds out that the map is being held by "Big" Jack Horner, who wants to use the Wishing Star to have all the magic in the world for himself. While trying to steal the map, he unexpectedly reunites with Kitty Softpaws, who wants the map for herself. She's mad at Puss for what happened at Santa Colomba. They, along with Perrito, manage to escape Goldi and Jack and head to the Dark Forest, where the Wishing Star is. They find out that the path is different for everyone who wields the map. Puss and Kitty have terrifying paths, but Perrito has an easy one, so they let him hold the map. When he gets rid of a stick, Perrito follows it, leading to him being captured by Jack. Puss and Kitty manage to save him, but Puss starts having hallucinations of the wolf and runs away, leading to them losing the map to Goldi. Puss reveals what happened to Perrito and admits to leaving Kitty at the altar at the Church of Santa Colomba, which he has regretted ever since. Kitty overhears their conversation, and tells him she never came to the altar either, feeling like she could never compete with someone who loves himself more than her. They manage to find the map in the cabin of the Bears and steal it back. However, Perrito is captured once again. Kitty goes to save him while Puss is trapped in the Cave of Lost Souls. While there, Puss encounters the wolf again, and the wolf reveals he is actually “Death”. Puss runs away, even after he spots Kitty and Perrito. Meanwhile, Goldi reveals that she wishes for a real family. While Baby is heartbroken, Mama tells her they'll help get her wish if that's what she really wants. Finally reaching the star, Puss is about to make his wish but is stopped by Kitty, who calls him out for his selfishness. He reveals that death is coming for him. However, they are interrupted by Goldi and Jack, who attack them. While Jack is thrown into a never-ending bag, Goldi saves Baby when he is almost thrown off the star. Puss encounters "Death" again, but this time chooses to fight him willingly. Death, disappointed, decides to spare him after seeing that Puss has changed, but warns him that they will meet again. Puss and Kitty reconcile and start a new relationship. While all seems to be well, Jack eats a cookie that makes him grow big. He tries to make his wish but is stopped by Kitty and Puss, who, along with Goldi, decide to rip up the map as all of their wishes have already happened. This causes the star to crumble, killing Jack. Puss, Kitty, and Goldi go their separate ways, while Perrito finally gets his name. Later, Puss, Kitty, and Perrito steal a ship and head to Far Far Away to reunite with some old friends.

Trivia
- The Sleeping Giant of Del Mar closely resembles Plant Island Epic Wubbox, so TikTokers called the Giant a Epic Plant Wubbox. [1]
- This movie takes over the release of Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
- During Puss's fight with the giant, one can find Death in a shadowed alleyway, proving his claim of witnessing every single one of Puss's death is least partially true.
- This is the first animated feature film of Harvey Guillen, Wagner Moura, and Florence Pugh.
- At 1 hour and 42 minutes, this is the longest film in the Shrek franchise.
- Jack Horner's death scene is a homage to the Terminator's death in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, except that he gives a thumbs-down instead of a thumb up.
- This is the first Dreamworks Animation film to be executive produced by Christopher Meledandri.
- There is no acknowledgement of the events of The Adventures of Puss in Boots, including the Dulcinea, who is conspicuously absent, despite heading out with Puss at the end of the series. However, there may be a reference during Puss' 2nd death, where Puss was killed by several dogs during a game of cards. This may be a throwback to Season 3 Episode 8 "Coin Toss" which in the final scenes Puss saw Cleevil and Kid Pickles playing cards; after that, he said that he loves this game.
